Your first month at East Tennessee State University is a time of discovery - learning how to balance classes and social life, meet new people, navigate campus and build routines that work for you.

The transition to college can come with a lot of questions: How do I manage my time? Where can I study? What resources are available? How do I meet people? What should I get involved in?

While everyone’s experience is different, ETSU students say there are a few things that can make the transition easier: take advantage of campus resources, create a routine, get involved and give yourself permission to try something new.

Find the resources you need

One of the first things new students can do is learn about the resources available on campus. From academic spaces and student support services to recreation and opportunities to get involved, ETSU offers resources designed to help students succeed inside and outside the classroom.

Jenna Michelli, a first-year radiological sciences major, was surprised by how many resources were available to students and how accessible they were.

“I am able to squeeze in some time in the gym between classes or study time in the library or Academic Building,” Michelli said.

Take time during your first few weeks to explore campus and identify the spaces and services you may want to use throughout the semester. Finding a favorite study spot, learning where to get academic support or building exercise into your schedule can make campus feel more familiar and manageable.

Build a routine that works for you

College often comes with more freedom, which leads to more responsibility for managing your own time. Creating a routine can help students stay on top of coursework while still making time for friends, activities and rest.

For first-year biomedical health sciences major Gracen Clark, finding the right balance between academics and social life has been one of the biggest challenges.

“The hardest part so far would be trying to balance my social life with my academics,” Clark said. “I’ve got a heavy workload that I’ve got to manage, but I’m also trying to find time to hang out with friends.”

Instead of trying to do everything at once, students can start by identifying their most important tasks each day, planning ahead for larger assignments and setting aside time for activities they enjoy.

Give yourself time to adjust

It can take time to figure out what works for you in college. A routine that works during your first few weeks may change as you become more familiar with your classes, campus and responsibilities.

For first-year biomedical health sciences major Sydney Clark, learning to manage her workload has been one of the biggest adjustments. She said developing a routine has made things more manageable.

If the transition feels overwhelming at times, remember that adjusting to college is a process. Ask questions, reach out for help and give yourself time to find your rhythm.

Get involved and meet people

One of the best ways to make campus feel like home is to get involved. Students can explore organizations, intramural sports, campus events and other opportunities to connect with their peers.

Caedmon Nidiffer, a first-year business management major, said he was surprised by how connected ETSU felt and how easy it was to build a community. Football games, Preview and unexpected hangouts with friends have been some of his favorite experiences so far.

Clark also found community through recruitment and is looking forward to trying new activities, including intramural sports.

Try something new

Getting involved doesn't have to mean finding the perfect organization or activity right away. The first year of college is a chance to explore new interests and discover what you enjoy.

Returning student Melody Lowrance, a clinical psychology major, encourages first-year students to take advantage of opportunities even when they feel nervous.

“Do the thing! Whatever it is, try something new,” Lowrance said. “Talk to organizations you may be nervous to join, play an intramural sport you've never played before, and go to the group fitness class you've never tried.”

Her advice: Don't wait until you feel completely comfortable to get involved.

“Put yourself out there and remember that doing it scared is better than not doing it at all,” Lowrance said.

Make the most of your first month

There is no single right way to experience your first month at ETSU. Some students may quickly find their friend group and favorite activities, while others may need more time to settle in.

As you continue through your first semester, focus on building habits that support your success: explore your resources, create a manageable routine, ask for help when you need it, make time for yourself and look for opportunities to connect with others.

Your first month is only the beginning. There are people to meet, resources to discover, traditions to experience and new things to try. Take it one step at a time, and give yourself the opportunity to find your place at ETSU.
