If you’ve completed your degree online, there are a few things you’ll want to know. Check out these graduation and pre- and post-ceremony FAQs – including some delicious food recommendations and some picture-perfect campus locations.

Graduation

Graduates in caps and gowns sit and stand together inside the Mini-Dome during a graduation ceremony, facing the stage as they celebrate the occasion.

Can I participate in a graduation ceremony if I complete my degree online?

Yes! Graduates receive graduation confirmation once they have met, or are expected to meet, all graduation requirements.

Is attending the ceremony required?

No. Attendance at the ceremony is not required to graduate. Those who cannot attend the ceremony will still receive their diplomas. Students will receive an official digital copy of their diploma as well as a physical copy of the diploma through the mail. Diplomas should arrive approximately 20 days after being issued. Review diploma issuance dates for detailed information.

How many family and friends can I invite to the graduation ceremony?

Tickets for family, friends, and any other guests are not required for the ceremony. There is no limit on the number of guests per graduate – the more, the merrier! Information for guests, including entry, seating, parking, disability services, and security protocols can be viewed in the “All Your Commencement Information” section of the Commencement web page.

Is the graduation ceremony available to watch online?

Yes! The ceremonies are live streamed, and a video will be posted on the website following the event. Each will be posted on the ETSU Commencement web page. This can be a great option for friends and family who can’t attend the ceremony in person. However, it is important to note that only the names of those graduates' present at each ceremony will be announced from the stage.

How do I order my cap and gown?

Visit the Student Regalia Information web page for step-by-step instructions on ordering your cap and gown. These items will be mailed to you prior to the ceremony.

Before or After the Graduation Ceremony

Can I explore campus before or after the ceremony?

Yes! You are welcome to explore your ETSU campus. There are several landmarks to check out, photo opportunities, and more. Here are a few interesting things about campus to keep in mind as you walk around campus:

  • University Commons. Opened in 2021, this part of campus links the D. P. Culp Student Center to the William B. Greene football stadium. While in the commons, you can enjoy the giant slide, putt-putt, corn hole, and outdoor seating.
  • Sherrod Library. The library is a hub of student resources and activities. As an online student, you may not have been in the library previously, opting instead for ETSU’s distance library services. While you’re on campus for graduation, take some pictures in front of this campus staple – and also enjoy Borchuck Plaza.
