At East Tennessee State University, outdoor adventure isn’t something students wait for the weekend to experience.
It’s part of their everyday routine.
A hike up Buffalo Mountain. A run on the Tweetsie Trail just minutes from campus. A walk downtown to visit a local coffee shop. Maybe a paddle on the Nolichucky River as the morning fog lifts off the water.
That’s because at ETSU, the outdoors isn’t an escape — it’s an extension of life as a Buccaneer.
A campus built for exploration
Located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, ETSU offers direct access to one of the most adventure-rich regions in the country. Within minutes of campus, students can hike, bike, climb and paddle across a landscape that serves as both a playground and a learning environment.
But what truly sets ETSU apart is how deeply those opportunities are woven into the student experience.
Through academic programs, research opportunities, and hands-on learning, students don’t just explore the outdoors; they study it, protect it and build careers around it.
Students interested in solving environmental problems, exploring geography, studying conservation efforts or working in fields such as community or outdoor recreation have access to a curriculum that is innovative and hands-on.
ETSU’s parks and recreation management concentration provides opportunities for students to work directly with state and national parks in the area, allowing them to gain valuable hands-on experience in the field. This course of study allows students to match their passion for the outdoors with their academic career.
Student organizations and campus recreation programs further expand those opportunities. On-campus recreation includes the five-mile University Woods and Trail System, a nine-hole disc golf course, the Basler Team Challenge and Aerial Adventure Course and the indoor rock-climbing wall in the Wayne G. Basler Center for Physical Activity (CPA). Additionally, the Outdoor Adventure Center in the CPA equips students with gear rentals and organizes group excursions like backpacking, whitewater rafting, mountain biking and more at local trails and waterways.
A proven leader in outdoor adventure
That everyday connection to the outdoors has earned ETSU national recognition.
ETSU has been named a Top Adventure College by readers of Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine, standing out among institutions across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic for its commitment to outdoor programs, environmental initiatives and access to world-class recreation.
Now, ETSU is once again in the running.
The quest for a win
Voting is officially underway in the annual Blue Ridge Outdoors Top Adventure College Tournament, a 32-school bracket-style competition that invites the public to vote for the region’s best outdoor-focused institutions.
Each round features head-to-head matchups, with winners advancing based on fan votes.
ETSU enters the tournament with a chance to secure the title for a third time.
How to support ETSU
Students, alumni and the community are encouraged to cast their votes and help ETSU advance through each round of competition.
Voting is open now and continues throughout the tournament, which ends on April 27. Supporters can vote once per round on the contest website.
Whether it’s a sunrise hike, a day on the river or a class rooted in the natural world, ETSU continues to prove that outdoor adventure is more than just a weekend activity.
