ETSU Chorale will perform at the Tennessee Music Educators Association All-State Conference and host a free send-off concert March 29 in Johnson City.

Being selected to perform at the Tennessee Music Educators Association All-State Conference isn't something that happens often. It is recognition reserved for the state's most outstanding ensembles – validation that comes from peers, educators and industry professionals who know excellence when they hear it.

The East Tennessee State University Chorale earned that recognition this year.

Now, the ensemble is preparing to represent ETSU on the state stage in Nashville this April. But before they go, they're offering the community a chance to hear what impressed the selection committee.

The Chorale will present a free send-off concert on Sunday, March 29, at 3 p.m. at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church in downtown Johnson City. The performance will showcase the same program that the ensemble will perform at the conference and give the community an opportunity to support students as they prepare for one of the most prestigious performances of their college careers.

"This invitation reflects years of dedication, not just from this year's ensemble, but from the culture of excellence we've built together," said Dr. Alan Stevens, chair of the ETSU Department of Music and director of the ETSU Chorale. "Our students work incredibly hard, and this recognition means the world to them. We're honored to represent ETSU and the region, and we hope the community will join us as we prepare for this moment."

More than 80 years of tradition

The ETSU Chorale has been the university's premier choral ensemble for more than 80 years. Comprised of students from diverse academic disciplines, the group is selected through a rigorous audition process and known for its high level of performance and strong sense of community.

The ensemble performs repertoire spanning from early music to contemporary works, including classical, folk, spirituals and modern choral literature. They perform regularly throughout the region and serve as the centerpiece of ETSU's annual Holiday Concert, which draws thousands each year.

The March 29 concert provides a rare opportunity to experience the artistry that earned the Chorale its state conference invitation.

Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church is located at 201 S. Roan Street in Johnson City. Admission is free, and all are welcome.

This is what makes Johnson City one of Tennessee’s best college towns: world-class performances, accessible to everyone, featuring students who represent the best of what ETSU has to offer.
