ETSU’s Boland Research Day showcases student research, creative work and community engagement across campus and the region.

East Tennessee State University will host the Dr. Jay W. Boland Research Day and Community Engagement Showcase on Wednesday, April 15.

This annual event highlights the innovative scholarly work and community engagement efforts of over 250 undergraduate and graduate students, residents and fellows, and includes two poster sessions, oral presentations, creative displays and more. These projects reflect the many hands-on learning opportunities ETSU’s students receive in the classroom, the laboratory and the community.

The day combines what used to be three major events – the Boland Undergraduate Research Symposium, the Appalachian Student Research Forum and the Community-Engagement Showcase – into one university-wide celebration.

ETSU students, faculty and staff, and the public are invited to attend this showcase of student research and service, which honors the legacy of the late Dr. Jay W. Boland, a beloved professor and mentor who championed student research and inspired generations of scholars during his time at ETSU.

The event will last all day, with activities from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Various locations within the D.P. Culp Student Center will host all of the Research Day presentations and posters, and the Community Engagement Showcase will take place at the Reece Museum.

The awards reception will be held Friday, April 17, from 2-4 p.m. in the Gump Conference Room, located on the second floor of Ross Hall.

“While there are many fulfilling and fun parts of my role, Boland Research Day is probably my favorite day of the year,” said Dr. Nick Hagemeier, ETSU vice provost for research and chief research officer. “We have exceptional students working with exceptional faculty and staff at ETSU. The breadth and depth of student talent are impressive every year.”

For ETSU students, the deadline to submit proposals for presentations at the Community Engagement Showcase has been extended to Wednesday, April 1. Students who have engaged in community service activities, Community-Engaged Learning classes, community-based research or alternative break experiences may submit proposals until 11:59 p.m. on that date.
